What is a process group?
Process group psychotherapy is a form of group therapy focused on the interactions and dynamics among group members. In this setting, participants share their thoughts and feelings, exploring interpersonal relationships and emotional responses in real-time.
The therapist facilitates discussions, helping members reflect on their experiences, gain insights into their behavior, and understand how they relate to others. This approach emphasizes the here-and-now experience, allowing individuals to learn from one another and develop social skills in a supportive environment.
Why Group psychotherapy
“By the crowd they have been broken, by the crowd they shall be healed” (Cody Marsh)
We are born into groupings of people. We develop in society as part of groups. Our cultures are determined by ways of being that are implemented in groups. Therefore, group therapy is a fundamental treatment modality that uses the wisdom of the members as each one brings their life experience to shine a light into your life. Other’s perceptions on you are offered with humility and candor and the purpose of group therapy is to further create a context of growth. We believe that underlying most types of psychological dysfunction and suffering, there is an underlying relational component that has gone awry. Group offers a unique opportunity to address these relational misfits or mis-steps with the guidance of a trained leader. Online group therapy is another service provided by Embodied Psychotherapy.
In our process group you will develop better communication strategies for you will be asked to put feelings and impulses into words. Your only pre-requisite is to be able to be present and to commit for the schedule that will be continuous. This is an ongoing closed group which means that once we recruit the 8-10 people in a group we will remain with the same members until termination. Most groups have 8-10 people and there is no theme associated with them for is an interpersonal process group relational dynamics are at the core of what is observed and worked through. The fee for each group is paid before group starts and is $50.00.
Minimum commitment (2 months)
What to expect:
In this type of group therapy, participants explore their interpersonal relationships and emotional patterns, emphasizing how past experiences and unconscious processes influence current interactions.
Key features include:
- Relational Focus: The group emphasizes the connections between members and how these relationships reflect broader patterns in their lives. Members are encouraged to discuss their feelings about one another and the dynamics that emerge in the group.
- Psychodynamic Principles: The therapist helps members explore underlying thoughts and feelings, including unconscious motives and conflicts. This exploration aims to uncover how past relationships shape present behavior.
- Process Orientation: The group prioritizes the “here and now,” focusing on immediate interactions and emotional experiences rather than specific issues or content. This approach allows for real-time feedback and exploration of relational dynamics.
- Therapeutic Alliance: The relationship between group members and the therapist is central to the process. A safe and supportive environment encourages open communication and vulnerability.
Overall, this approach aims to enhance self-awareness, improve interpersonal relationships, and facilitate personal growth through the shared experiences of group members.
Choosing therapy is a courageous step towards the kind of vulnerability that heals.
